I purchased a computer from them quite some time ago, and took advantage of a nice very low interest rate to build credit for myself. After the low interest rate had expired I called to pay off my account one day. I go through the long process over the phone of explaining that I wanted to pay the balance, and they agree to waive the phone payment fee (I mean really?? WTF why do companies still charge to pay over the phone?). I do the little recorded permission to take the balance of the account, and get confirmation and everything.
About 4 weeks later I start getting phone calls from numbers I don't recognize. The calls never seem to come at a convenient time and they never leave a message. I called back after a couple calls from there and get a rep who informs me that my account is past due by a month and that I need to make a payment immediately. I explain to the person that I had paid the account in full and had already requested that the account be closed. His response was that the payment never happened, and that it wasn't even rejected by the bank, it simply was never sent because someone had made a mistake somewhere. I check my backup bank account which I had used to pay the account off with, and sure enough the money is still sitting in there.
Long story made a little less long, I finally managed to get the balance paid, and Dell left me a nice gift on my credit report showing that I was over 30 days late on my last payment to them, even though it was their fault that they weren't paid.
