I've never been able to determine from articles about this apparent pay gap whether the figures quoted are lifetime averages or "one year" salary for woman vs man in same job with same experience.

And they certainly don't take into account the fact that a lot of women find it more difficult to ask for a pay rise than most men do. That's just personality.
