My parents did want the best for me, but they didn't exactly coddle me. So I did get my share of cuts and scrapes while running around and playing growing up, I did get bad grades occaisionally (still do every now and then, in college, though it still doesn't feel great), didn't take santizer to high school with me, etc. What some parents do now are just horrible.
You win some, you lose some, but "winning" in the largest sense is as much about knowing how to deal with the latter as how to achieve the former.

I disagree; even to the extent that's the real problem it's still down to indulgent parents.

It's extreme indulgence, not involvement.

extreme indulgence is a problem but with one exception those were not good examples

"Kids need to feel badly sometimes"? What should we do? Dip their fingers in acid?

It would work, and definitely put an end to all this touchy-feeliness.

I would classify editing the N-word out of Huckleberry Finn to apply to this issue...

"Undiplomatic" is one thing, "inflammatory" quite another.
