I disagree; even to the extent that's the real problem it's still down to indulgent parents.

His arguments don't real support his conclusion they are just easy for a lot of people to agree and they seem some what related so they sound good. It isn't helicopter parents and hand sanitizer that are the problem (I am sure people laughed at all those parents making their kids brush their as well). Kids today are soft because they spend all their time sitting on the ass being entertained.
One of the things that toughens kids up is having to fight. Who is in favor of more violence and bullying at school?
As for the rising level of anxiety at our college system I would think the fact that some many more students go is part of the problem. A lot of the kids in our university system really shouldn't be there.

A lot of is down to stunted social development due to the extremes to which parental involvement have gone: Most aspects of the formal social environment are heavily regimented by parents, while children are allowed to much latitude in the informal one. So parents tell kids it's "wrong" to want their youth soccer team to win, but don't want to "interfere" when they discover the kids are sneaking out to get high, steal cars and conceive more children in the back seats of them. I still think it comes down to misplaced and even warped parental priorities; if parents didn't force schools to admit them all there wouldn't be a surplus of college students.

It's extreme indulgence, not involvement.

"Kids need to feel badly sometimes"? What should we do? Dip their fingers in acid?

It would work, and definitely put an end to all this touchy-feeliness.

I would classify editing the N-word out of Huckleberry Finn to apply to this issue...
