Incitement to racial hatred isn't illegal in the US, I believe...

It's not the kind of thing where you can say "It's ok to do this therefore it's ok to do that".
Well, kinda, yeah. The reason I used the murder analogy is because murder is arguably worse than pedophila, yet it tends to be less polarizing (which is pretty awful, but that's a different conversation). So by using the murder analogy, we can examine our laws and reactions to something terrible, cooly and rationally.
And those things you've cited are fiction.
Doesn't really make a difference. Most of the things used in "Dexter" to kill someone, conceal the evidence and so on are perfectly applicable to the real world.
---Interesting sidenote: If this book was about a fictional character USING all of these techniques to rape children, would people be more or less upset?
Free speech is indeed protected, but there are limits on it - incitement to racial hatred, yelling "Fire" in a crowded place when there isn't one, etc - so I don't see a real problem with including a how to for paedophilia in the illegal grouping.
You can be as racist as you want in the US, using words, anyway. If I wanted to, I could spend a few hours every day wandering around my town, shouting about how the blacks, Jews and Mexicans are conspiring to overthrow the US government and that we shouldn't trust a-one of them, not to mention they're all really ugly.
Now if I tried to ACT on those beliefs- say, by attacking a Jewish man, or refusing to hire a black woman because of her race- that's illegal.
Shouting "Fire" in a movie theater is likely to cause a stampede in a closed, confined area. I could write an essay about the best ways to shout fire in a movie theater, though.
The simple act of reading or writing this book isn't a crime.
I amuse myself.
This should make for an interesting debate

Free speech. An easy way for me to tell is replace the topic with the word "murder"
