It's my debit card; it's issued through my checking account bank and is what I use to withdraw cash from my account at ATMs. But if I elect to use it as a "credit" card at the POS I don't use my PIN and I sign instead. And with the new regulations on overdrafts, it doesn't extend "credit" unless the consumer has specifically arranged with the bank for that to be permitted. So mine would disallow a purchase if the account didn't contain sufficient funds.

Oh. I'm not sure how using it at a PoS is "using it as a credit card", apart perhaps from the signing part (which in here is impossible with debit cards). I was thinking you meant using a credit card as a debit card, i.e. using it to pay for things electronically without ever using the "credit" part of it.

Yeah, I'm not sure either except there's a button you push to use it as "debit" or use it as "credit", but even if you use it as credit it's still pulling the money out of your account. The differences are the PIN/signature, that there are sometimes fees added by the bank if you've made it a "debit" transaction, and it used to be that you had to run it as "credit" to get the consumer protections offered by Visa/MC in case of fraud or disputed charges...but I don't think that's true anymore.

I'd like to use credit cards more without feeling guilty that it's costing the business money. *NM* - 20/12/2010 03:26:04 PM 217 Views
