It doesn't change the fact that Mexico's current reputation is that of a corrupt, dirty, poverty ridden, crime filled country. I can't imagine that FIFA would believe that they would be able to convince droves of people to travel there right now.

Mexico has the massive problem of the raging drug war, yes. But it's just not true that their current reputation is of a "corrupt, dirty, poverty ridden country". Certainly less so on all of those counts than South-Africa, and they got to do a World Cup. And you know, the drug war can't go on forever.
The reality of the situation may not match the image, for all I know, Brazil is a more poor, corrupt, and crime filled place than Mexico, and they just got the tournament. The problem is that when people think of Brazil they think of beaches, a giant statue, and parties, when people think of Mexico they think of crime and corruption.

Maybe Americans do. The rest of the world, not so much.

Our opinion of Mexico right now is not overwhelmingly positive. I don't know a lot about their image overseas, for some reason I sorta thought it was probably pretty similar to our opinion. Just another example of how we think the U.S. is the center of the universe I suppose. :P

Why would anyone vote for Australia? - 01/12/2010 06:03:15 PM 508 Views
Because, out of all the choices for the 2022 Cup, the U.S. and Australia are the best choices - 01/12/2010 06:32:08 PM 525 Views
Why would you say that? - 01/12/2010 07:48:42 PM 536 Views
Because they just hosted it in 2002. - 01/12/2010 08:54:16 PM 680 Views
Your opinion that Australia is better than Japan and SK doesn't seem to be based on facts. - 01/12/2010 07:59:14 PM 482 Views
