So you choose to believe in option 2, the eternal universe? It's as valid an interpretation as any other.
For the record, I tend to agree that the universe is not innately human- or cat-like. However, I find it just as irrational to believe that the universe has always existed or that it sprang from nothing. No evidence or logic supports those theories either.

I don't think the possibilities are restricted to the set you present. Cosmologists have proposed many hypotheses over the years, see e.g. brane cosmology. I don't specifically support any of them. There is a relatively large amount of empirical evidence in support of a Big Bang; whether that was the "start" of the universe or a transformative event within it, I don't know. Not actively believing in a specific position is the rational thing to do, when no position is supported by sufficient evidence.
Is NASA set to reveal on Thursday signs of possible extraterrestial life within the solar system?

If there is life in the solar system then it is likely a natural development in the universe.

Well, I don't actually agree with the first part of your Catch-22. At least, not entirely.
