A whole lot has to do with how often you log in to Skype. Joel Send a noteboard - 14/11/2010 02:59:45 PM
At work, we have three chats that have been in existence for over a year. Two are work related, one is sports related. :P Skype does a better job of persistent chats than any other IM program I'm immediately aware of. Why do you say otherwise?

Really? The RAFO chats begin to lag significantly after a few months. We've had to abandon one already; it was beginning to take days to load new messages. The second "main chat" is beginning to take a long time, too.

I'm not seriously advocating IRC as a replacement, since a grand total of about four people would be able/willing to go through all of the steps necessary for that. Still, it is much better.

EDIT: To clarify, when I say it "took days," I am being literal. It took several 24-hour periods for the chat to show new messages.

If it's been a week since you logged on, it's going to take a while to update. Some of it is also initializing the program when you first login, I believe; for example, none of the Skype chats have updated for me yet because this computer's been on maybe ten minutes. I expect all of them within the hour though. Bear in mind that Skypes performance is limited by the bandwidth of its users, too, which is why I usually recommend someone with a pretty good connection host the calls. I usually had no trouble hosting as many as nine people on a call in TX (have yet to hit double digits for a conference call, sadly) but some hosts have had trouble with as few as five people.

Nine times out of ten though, at least in my experience, update lags can be fixed by logging into Skype once a day, at least long enough for it update the logs of everything said while you were gone. In other words, it's usually only a problem if you aren't using it much, so it's a minor annoyance at worst, and even that problem can usually be solved simply by logging in frequently. But, yes, if you have a months worth of old chat to download it will take a little while. ;) Personally, I consider it a small price to pay to give everyone the ability to counter "I NEVER said x!" with "here's a cut and paste of where you said precisely that on a the bth at c o'clock; feel free to scroll up if you don't believe me". The original chat does, ultimately, update for me, but I reluctantly agreed with the consensus that after a year plus of use it was simply too clogged to continue. I may have hastened that a bit, however, with the satisfaction I took in being able to "show all messages" and get everything said in there since the moment wotmania and it's chat died before our eyes. :<img class=' />

Nope, but there are multiple Skype chats dedicated to RAFO. - 14/11/2010 01:21:16 AM 601 Views
Because Skype is not made for permanent chatrooms and we get tired of waiting days for a message. *NM* - 14/11/2010 02:30:09 AM 257 Views
No? I would say it kind of is, actually. - 14/11/2010 06:01:25 AM 578 Views

Thank you for proving my point. Most people have no interest in logging in daily. *NM* - 14/11/2010 10:25:49 PM 271 Views
Then I dare say there's no problem. - 15/11/2010 01:16:40 AM 557 Views

Sometimes it seems like the REAL complaint is that no one else makes it as effortless as Mike did - 15/11/2010 02:07:52 PM 459 Views
That's okay, mIRC is 20 years out of date too. - 15/11/2010 03:08:21 PM 609 Views
