You need to look at the exit polls. Dem turnout was down slightly, the big difference between 2006 and 2008 (off election vs off election) is a 36 point swing in the independent vote. Obama pushed a liberal agenda from day one and he lost th3e center for doing so. The liberals are disillusioned that he did not get to take a even more advantage of their brief moment of power to push their ideas on an unwilling country but that is not why they got blistered in the election. In fact that they tried is a better explanation.

Everything in the middle of the road is either dead or yella, remember? If he were the radical the Tea Party says, why did he balk at a bipartisan (and superior) healthcare reform because it was "too radical". Maybe he really IS trying to do incremental healthcare reform, but the fact is the country no longer has the stomach for more debate on the issue. That's why we had to do it right the first time. Oh, well....
