Palin has towering disapproval rates - mostly among Democrats, obviously, but partially among independents and Republicans, too. I really don't think the Republicans would want to risk losing the general by selecting such a divisive (and, let's face it, incompetent) candidate in the primaries. If Palin is smart, she'll try and influence the matter from the sidelines instead of trying to run and failing.
While I agree on the last sentence, all she has to do is get a more votes in the Republican primary than anyone else which takes the Democrats out the picture (beyond those Republican voters who are aware enough). I think if she ran then it isn't beyond believe that she could win, though exactly how her rhetoric would work when against Republicans might be interesting.
I'd bet on her trying to play kingmaker rather than getting involved though.
