My question is what you could be doing that needs such a heavy duty processor and not a better video card. Just reading the reviews, it seems like it gets the job done but isn't very high performance. The i7 seems like overkill when you can go 100 bucks cheaper and get an i5-760 lynnfield (quad core-2.8 GHz).
Honestly, the amount of performace boost you get out of the i7 compared to the i5 Lynfield is negligible for what you'll pay for it.
If you want to possibly upgrade it someday, my advice is to buy a better motherboard that will accept both socket types. That way you can upgrade when you want to without having to get a new motherboard.
And you don't NEED an SSD. Even some fairly hard-core gamers don't NEED an SSD. If the rest of your system is capable enough, the read-times on a traditional HD vs. an SSD won't be that noticeable outside of benchmarking.
There's $200 saved right there.
I'm looking at building an i5 system for my cousin soon with some decent hardware (but not too extravagant), and buying everything from the internal guts to the case it'll be about $1200. Comparable computers from Dell and Gateway are about $3000. And you could still cut some corners in the build I'm planning.
To know exactly what you should buy you need to know what exactly you'll be using it for.
