Okay, this will probably be the most boring thread ever, but I seem to lack the ability to make up my own mind on this topic.
This could never be a boring thread.
So, my partner and I have been looking at pretty old houses and found one that we are now trying to buy. It's in good shape, except for the kitchen.
Good plan, Batman.
My problem is that most kitchen inspiration looks the same these days. Everyone wants cherry cabinets, granite countertops, and stainless steel appliances.
People are idiots.
Oh, those appliances.
Why are they so popular?! Why does everyone HAVE to have them?
Because they are shiny, I think.
I get that they look GORGEOUS and gleaming and shiny and modern in certain kitchens. But not every kitchen. The one I have in mind is very simple, warm, and cozy. So to go and throw in an element of steel... I don't know that it would work.
It probably wouldn't.
But what are the alternatives?
(Here's the survey part.)
1. What kind of appliances do you have in your kitchen?
Ah. Well, it's rented so they're crap, unfortunately. There's a standalone cooker that's a double oven with hob, and that's electric. There's a tiny fridge and a dishwasher. There's a washing machine, a dryer and a tiny freezer in the garage.
2. How do you feel about them?
They're godawful. I hate electric hobs because there's not enough temperature control and they take forever to heat up. You also can't toss Le Creuset pots and pans around on them because of the glass top. The main oven takes decades to heat up and the top oven is virtually unusuable because it's dreadfully uneven in its heating. It's only a year old, but it was cheap, and you get what you pay for when it comes to appliances.
The fridge and freezer are ancient, inefficient and tiny.
The washing machine is okay, as is the dryer.
3. How would your dream kitchen be equipped? (If you are the type who thinks about these things, I'd be happy to hear about the whole picture, not just the appliances.)
Take a seat, you'll be listening for a while
First and foremost, Lainey wants an Aga. They're wonderful and there's always been one or something similar in my mother's house.
I want the Fischer Paykel double door fridge with a freezer drawer beneath it.
I'll probably go with Fischer Paykel double wall ovens as well, the mother loves hers and they heat up like lightning.
Washer and dryer will probably be Miele and I don't particularly care which specific ones.
I'm contemplating the Fischer Paykel dishdrawer, but reviews are very mixed so we'll see about that when the time comes.
I want a parquet floor and cream in-frame cabinets with a black quartz worktop and a huge centre island. Black Aga and away we go. I'm considering Fired Earth's Retro Metro tiles in Limehouse Green.
None of this will be in any way cheap
4. Do you think white can ever look good? (I'm thinking of some floating glass appliances I've seen... link at bottom.)
Of course it can. I can't see your picture though, I'm in work
5. Which do you consider more important in home design: resale value, or personal tastes/comfort? Would it change if you were planning to sell about 10 years down the line?
The latter if you're not planning to sell for a while. Do remember though that circumstances can change rapidly and you might have to sell before that.
6. Are there any home design fads you really hate?
People installing underfloor heating when it is totally inappropriate. People putting in "feature walls" with oversized flock wallpaper when it doesn't work at all.
7. Any you love?
Not really, I go my own way
8. Have you ever liked something, then pulled away from it just because it was a fad?
A couple of baby names, but that's it.
9. What do you think is going to be labeled the "'00s" look in a few decades?
Maple units, steel drawer pulls, black countertop. Boooring.
10. What's your favorite feature of your kitchen?
The window, at the moment
