That surprises me, but alright. Joel Send a noteboard - 06/10/2010 10:00:14 AM
China doesn't circumcise, nor do Hindus in India. Nor does most of Europe nor most of Africa, and it's certainly not common in South America either. I have to admit I wonder who ever got the tradition started in the US...

Well, just a wild stab, but my guess would be either American Indians or you guys, and I'd bet on the latter. The real question is why it became so prevalent outside Jewish and Islamic cultures if it was so unique to them (though in some ways making the distinction between "Hindu Indians" and Indians in general robs that stat of its punch; the high populations and prevalence of Islam in India, Pakistan and Indonesia mean there are plenty of circumcised non-Americans. ) There's certainly no religious basis for it among Christians; the NT is VERY clear on that (I believe it's Peter (:P) who at one point expresses the wish that those demanding Gentile circumcision would "go all the way" and castrate themselves. :P)
And while it may not be a hot topic for you, how many babies have you had exactly?

None, obviously.
And I agree that bathrooms in nature parks are a good thing. I wasn't complaining or trying to just say negative things about the US. I think that US has many good and even great things. And when I was in Yosemite last spring I was very happy to find bathrooms along the trail.

Sorry if I took it the wrong way; it had the feel of "why are you trying to urbanize nature?" but I see what you meant now.
The word hiking isn't a European word.

Oh? What is its origin then? The entire internet, apparently, would like to know, because no one else seems to have a clue where it comes from, though Wikipedia does claim the Brits use it in the same sense of "pastoral walking tour" that we do (and I'd be stunned if that's not the part of Europe where we got it. ;))
