it's a tourist attraction. Obviously it makes sense to put bathrooms there.
However, installing a bathroom at, say, the bottom of the canyon, would be inane, but totally something America would do to something less sanctified than the grand canyon

Back before the Pave the Earth mentality took hold much of America was considered a pristine wilderness. Strange as it sounds today, the majority seemed to think that a GOOD thing. From a "pack in, pack out" perspective bathrooms make sense to me; there will still be an environmental impact, but I expect it will be less than just letting all of the millions of visitors most national parks get annually just dump wherever they please (and how much do you want to bet the Interior Dept. could put a precise number on the figures? ) Animals leave corpses in the woods, too, but we probably shouldn't.
