You can say it's only going to be on the rich, or the top 2%, or those making >$250,000 or anything else, but even if it's the right thing to do the public is going to hear "You're losing your home and I'm raising your taxes. Yes, it's irresponsible for progressives to sit this one out; their tendency to do so when Dems nominate weak liberals while Republicans do their civic duty and pick SOMEONE to run their country is one reason the Dems keep getting their heads handed to them. However, that doesn't mean Dems should take their constituency for granted. This whole business of "vote for us to get/keep them out" is why we need a legit third party so we stop settling for the least awful government.
