According the posted article people were chaining themselves to tress and had brought tarps to defend themselves against water cannon. 1000 police officers in riot gear showed up so it can't have been much of a surprise.
Now they may or may not have done anything to deserve the violence, I really don't know, but they should have known it was likely to get ugly.

As I mentioned before, the tarps were there because people had been camping in nasty weather. And it wasn't the first demo here, we've had dozens since last year. Weekly in the beginning, twice a week after the working had started. None of them went violent.
The normal way it goes if you stand in the way of the police on such occasions is this: You get warned three times, and you get time to walk away during and after the warnings. If you don't, you get carried away by the police, get a fine (usually 80 €) and that's it.
This time (according to eye-witnesses and footage available on the internet): no warnings, whoever was in the way of police putting fences down in the park was watered, peppered and/or beaten.
I'll be more enthusiastic about encouraging thinking outside the box when
there's evidence of any thinking going on inside it.
