I think Mormon's are active over here, trying to convert people now but it is a very recent thing. For years my only knowledge about them was they were the baddies in a Sherlock Holmes story
I would doubt the average person outside of the US knows about them, perhaps beyond the name and a few funny "facts" at best.
Buddhists, by comparison, are world famous - I'd say it is reasonable to expect (or hope) most normal people have heard of the Dalai Lama, for example.

Oh, no doubt Buddhism is more well known globally. The question probably wouldn't have been on there if they weren't polling an Americans, but an American who's never heard of the Mormons has lived his life under a rock. So it's a religion, and any American who doesn't know about it probably doesn't know about any others.
