The Mormons being much more common in the US and almost unknown elsewhere.
They have a very robust foreign missionary program, even by the standards of American evangelicals. They even picked off a wotmaniac Brit (kinda wonder how she's doing, 'cos I haven't seen her since about a year before the end. ) It IS a religion though, so it seems within the scope of a general religion test. There isn't exactly a horde of American Buddhists, but there's a question about that religion on the quiz. I DID think about that, but ultimately it's a question about a religion, IMHO, not a country.
There may not be all that many American buddhists, but there sure are a lot of buddhists around.
A country where someone can grow to adulthood without knowing about Mormonism; this just keeps getting better. And it's a legit religion, widespread or not; certainly any poll of American religious knowledge would be incomplete without it.

I think when a country becomes a world power you need to cover more of its past.

Depends on how much that past mingles with yours.
