Growing up Catholic we never cared about Bible-thumpers. I still don't know who the last guy is and hope to remain ignorant because they're all a bunch of idiots.
Maybe. They pretty much built the country though, and, as I noted elsewhere, their influence on both the political left and right remains strong. The last guy has a modern name sake who's run for President a few times, and that campaign was built around a history of social justice founded on scripture, a history that's older that's existed in the United States longer than the United States itself has existed. I can see why you'd ignore something so trivial that it gave birth to the American Revolution, abolition and the turn of the century labor movement (and you've studied the third Great Awakening, I'm sure; remember the Cross of Gold?) Bearing in mind the survey found that about half of all Catholics know (a lot) less about transubstantiation than I, maybe ignorance isn't a selling point.
