Brought to you by Parasitology Class (something Doctors don't have.)
Cats typically get toxoplasma parasites from predation/raw meat. Avoid these, avoid toxoplasma.
Between those that do and do not have cats, there is no association of incidince of positive titers for Toxoplasma parasites.
If you or your significant other/family member, etc... become pregnant, there is no reason to get rid of or euthanize the cat (can you believe doctors actually tell people to KILL their cats over this? What, cats can't live somewhere else for 9 months?)
You are more likely to contract toxoplasma from eating undercooked meat than by having a cat, being a veterinarian/tech, cattery owner, etc...etc...The three most common meats infected are pig, sheep, and deer.
The next most common ways to contract toxoplasma are gardening and similar activites, and cleaning the litter box of a cat that happens to be shedding (see below)
Cats shed eggs for only about 1-3 weeks after they contract toxoplasma. Unless your cat has been recently infected (if it's an indoor cat and has not predated or been fed raw meat, this is highly unlikely), they are not shedding eggs for you to pick up.
A woman with a positive titer for toxoplasma is UNlikely to pass toxoplasma to a fetus.
Summary statement? Doctors are idiots. Do not kill your cat. Get your husband to clean the litter box and talk to your veterinarian. Toxoplasma comes from meat and Cat Poo (in litter/soil). Cook your meat and wash your hands so you don't eat poo. Problem. Solved.

Do you really need a good reason to kill a cat, though?

I've never heard anyone suggest killing a cat for that. Is it common?

I'm just trying to imagine what would happen if UK doctors told pregnant women to kill their cats.
