As he was a history professor and writes histories and alternate histories, this is not surprising

Even if they're rather pointless or misleading he still makes them. It makes him sound like a deep thinker and like he is beating those arrogant liberal elites at their own game.
His areas of expertise are Modern European History focusing on governmental policy's effect on social issues and education, he wrote books on the subject both as a doctoral candidate and a very junior and unknown house member. I don't automatically qualify 'professor talking about his area' as a deep thinker but it's a pretty good qualifier.
The intuitive mind is a sacred gift and the rational mind is a faithful servant. We have created a society that honors the servant and has forgotten the gift.

Once again, listen to the Economist and don't use abbreviations that aren't obvious.

I certainly don't remember seeing it anywhere. The abbreviation was unnecessary in any event.
