From what I remember, the actual park itself was very nice, focused on the history of the battle and the war and pretty respectful of all the soldiers who died there on both sides of the field.
The town itself I could do without. Very kitchsy, very touristy, and not in a good way. I can't see how bulding a casino is going in improve that, and it certainly doesn't give me an incentive to go and visit again. Rather the opposite.
But then, who am I to say that they shouldn't do it if it'll bring money into their community?
Well it's that second vote, ballot and wallet. Their community, their ballot, as it should be, but their community, and this casino, both run on tourist money, so the wallet vote counts big. That's what surprises me so much about this, whatever average national sentiment is, and I doubt people are going to be cheering this, those who are inclined to go to the park are probably those who view it as an especially solemn and/or historically significant place compared to the average American, it just wouldn't seem like a great crowd draw considering who the crowd is. To me, getting a little public outrage going on something like this is a good thing, in part, the old 'you never appreciate something until you lose it' adage applies. People start thinking about it and getting a bit ticked, well, some may decide to go visit, give the local economy a little boost, make their opinion on the casino clear at the same time. I think that's fair play, if they still want it, well, their city, not mine.
The intuitive mind is a sacred gift and the rational mind is a faithful servant. We have created a society that honors the servant and has forgotten the gift.
