Short summary: they've been together for 2 years, his gf is using this present month of Ramadan to see whether she thinks they should move on together and come out to the family, or break up. If they do come out to the family, I'm certain expectations will be of a marriage within the next couple of years. In that case, he will no longer be "just the boyfriend".
Good for them. When it reaches the state of expected marriage, then it's a great idea for him to learn Urdu. For now, I think he should hold off. And this is a bad thought: I hope she doesn't use his decision to learn it as a factor in whether they should "move on."
