Being criticized (during marketing prep or similar) for using words my colleagues apparently never bothered to learn pisses me off. Ok, yeah, because it's my fault your lexicon doesn't include "aficionado" or "morass." Or "lexicon," most likely. Fuckers.
When you use words that others don't know, does it reflect badly on you or them? If its effect is negative for them, don't stop using the words, but it if has a negative impact on your career, it's probably better to avoid less commonly used words.
E.g. my fiance uses words his colleagues don't know, but it's helped him establish a position of authority at work.
