Because if it was it's possible you've blown the thermostat - it should have a safety in it that stops that from happening but it happened to ours anyway (long story involving 2 weeks without hot water from any taps bar the shower, which had its own supply, and no less than 5 visits from a thankfully very friendly plumber), so I'd get the janitor out again if I were you...
