New silicon chips, built using lasers instead of copper wires, could push the speed up to 50 gigs a second, and that's 'just the beginning'. The article implies that a terabit per second speed is possible with this technology. (And it also mentions a petabit ... what the hell is a petabit?)

Interesting. It doesn't sound like it has any application in long-distance data transfer though...
