Since I bought a nook, I'll use that instead of "Kindle" but they're mostly interchangeable. The feature-set is very similar.
The iPad is heavy and large. If I'm going to carry around something that big, I might as well carry my 13" Macbook around (or the rumored forthcoming 11.6" Macbook Air). I can comfortably hold my nook in one hand while reading--you can't do that with an iPad.
The iPad is 150% more expensive than the nook (almost 200% more expensive than the nook Wifi only or the Kindle Wifi only). The iPad keyboard is not "laptop-replacement" good. It's barely useable for web-browsing.
And, lastly, the biggest reason I chose the nook is that e-ink is much easier on the eyes than staring at a backlit LCD screen. The iPad sucks for reading long-term on it.
