As an elitist, I welcome this trend. Tom Send a noteboard - 03/07/2010 05:37:01 AM
I'm an elitist and I admit it. I think that the vast majority of people are stupid, tasteless and wallow in their ignorance.

However, just because I look down on people doesn't mean I presume to tell them how to live their lives. Everyone has a right to live how they want, make their own mistakes and (hopefully) learn from them. The sad fact is that most people can't learn from others' mistakes. That may invalidate the study of history, really, but let's discuss that at another time.

People should be entrusted with their own future. They should make their own decisions and be free to live their lives as they want to. If they want to believe God created the world in 7 calendar days and dinosaurs were all herbivores before "the Fall", they have a right to do so. I will laugh with sheer contempt at their utter stupidity but they have a right to be stupid. If they want to drink a bottle of vodka and chase it with 6 lines of coke I may think they're slightly overdoing it, but that's their choice. If they want to build a landing strip behind their house for the UFOs, they have every right to do so (and I wholeheartedly approve of the sale of special "alien-friendly" cement that I can supply them with at a low cost of $3500 per bag).

Gun rights are part of the equation. They are guaranteed by our Constitution, they help to raise the level of superficial politeness (after all, one is less likely to recommend that an inbred drooling idiot stop fucking his sister if it will get that person shot) and they limit the power of the government to take extreme measures against the populace.

I think Sowell is absolutely correct.
Political correctness is the pettiest form of casuistry.

– Procopius
