As it is, they're already established, and it's well known that people want to ride them, and that it's better for the environment for people to ride them. Because of this, more and more cities are planning and developing to incorporate alternative modes of transport. You don't need to worry about bikes going anywhere. 
That said, you're sort of re-iterating an argument Tim made, which I already addressed. "If we do it your way, there are no bikes!" "If we can't ride on the road, we can't ride anywhere!"
And I was saying yes, well, I understand, but that doesn't make the problems with them ok just because there's no other way to ride them. Bikes aren't necessities. They should be ridden where it's safe and sensible to do so. If that's not possible in a particular location, they shouldn't be ridden there until the infrastructure is further developed.
