I read "administration" as "party, " sorry; in that case Curtis LeMay is closest in living memory.

Go back and read the part about "a member of a sitting President's administration".
However, LeMay was:
1) Officially retired by 1968,
2) a Nixon supporter (according to Wikipedia) until he decided Nixon was too friendly with the commies and
3) not at the top of the ticket.
Given that the only example that comes readily to mind is George McClellan running against Lincoln in 1864. IIRC, McClellan was officially retired by then, too, but voluntarily and specifically for the purpose of running against Lincoln.

It was an excellent article. It shows how Hillary is the only one with a clue.

He's might be a good general but he's also a loose gun. This is the third time he's fucked up. *NM*
