It would mean over half the country is getting what it voted for, roughly
Pfft, that's not what FPP in Britain is about!
For all the Tory talks, I really struggle to see how that can work - the Lib Dems have made electoral reform and PR their most recognise policy and they are centre left. An alliance with the Tories then has two options (that I can see) -
The differences between the three big parties are very slim, really, on a full spectrum. There's not that much they'd disagree about.
1) Tories agree to it, which based on voter percentages shows them being pushed to the Lib Dems old role - the third party no one takes seriously. Political suicide for the Tories.
They've got a rather larger proportion of the vote than either of the other two... Not sure of your point here?
2) the Lib Dems drop their biggest policy in favour for supporting a party that also disagrees with them on pretty much every other issue as well. Political suicide by the Lib Dems.
They don't, actually. That was one of the things I noticed in their manifestos.
Edit:
Or of course they do nothing now and wait till the Tories have got heavily into their cuts progamme, then join with Labour purely to force a new General Election, when the Tories have made themselves deeply unpopular and people are fired up against them.
That could indeed happen.

Lib Dems: Up 1% of the vote, down 10% of the seats.
