This makes it tempting for the kind of guy who's too nervous to talk anyway, and likes to just sit there thinking "OMG she's right next to me!" and enjoy torturing himself with the tension, but it isn't very helpful in the long run.
For a while you can just sit there and get comfortable with each other. No one expects the guy to be smart or funny during the film, because everyone's silent anyway. Plus the film gives you a topic to talk about afterwards, where it's easy to add a cup of coffee to prolong the evening.
But I guess you are right, it depends on the kind of guy.
