This is what comes from having your head of state effectively appoint the Prime Minister, if it was just left to the house of commons to appoint the prime minister it would be much simpler.
But it is the House of Commons that effectively appoints the PM, all the Queen does it okay who ever it is - her role is nothing more than ritual.
Doesn't the queen have to invite someone to be Prime Minister, or does she only invite them after Parliament nominates them? What does she do if it is hung parliament with coalition in place?
