I'm reading through Dune Chapterhouse at the moment and having some trouble understanding the strength of the Honored Matres compared to the Bene Gesserit and Duncan.

In Dune Heretics the BG show their superiority to the Honored Matre a couple of times, for example when Lucila beat-up an Honored Matre (i think it was Morbella(sp?))without much difficulty.

Furthermore, Duncan Idaho possessed superhuman speed and strength that surpassed even the BG and at this stage Duncan was still very young.

And yet in Dune Chapterhouse, all the BG a crapping themselves because the Honoured Matres are kicking their butts and Duncan's superhuman powers don't seem to exist anymore.

Am i missing something or is this just a consistency issue?

The BG skills are superior to the HM skills on a one-on-one basis, or at least the BG considers them so. The BG have a much greater control, the HM skills are more animalistic, triggered by reflexes and instinct, enhanced not by the Spice but something more akin to adrenaline.

The BG aren't afraid of the HM superior skills, they are afraid of their vastly superior numbers, and their mentality that for the BG taps into very dangerous areas of the human psyche (sexual enslavement and so on, their predatory nature), of the power base the HM can count on, and what else in the Scattering might be hiding.

The BG and HM have extremely different philosophies about survival. The BG are planners and control freaks, the HM are bent on survival of the fittest.

As for Duncan, his skills have not changed. He's in the no-ship, he's not fighting... The BG fear his skills.
