My other semi-gripe is the endings to the books. Book one ended okay as there was some closure. However, book two kind of pissed me off. Not to say it was a bad ending but damn they killed off darn near everyone I got to know over the course of the book what the hell? And the ending confrontation with Empress Laseen and the assasin was kind of a let down as well, it was far too easy for him to infiltrate her hideout/fortress.
A lot of people missed the boat with the books. The series is entitled the Malazan Book of the Fallen. Not Heroes or Victors or Survivors. The whole thing boils down to the tales of who died and how they died. It's a different concept and Erikson does a great job of building characters up just to take them from you.
The scene with Kalam Mekhar may seem a little underwhelming, but the whole scene was engineered by Laseen and Kalam recognized this quite early on. That's why he walked out after speaking to her and understanding she wasn't there.
