I read it many (maybe 15 or so?) years ago. I actually quite enjoyed it and thought it one of his better works. I kind of consider it his "middle period", after many of his classics were written but before his accident and sobriety when a lot of his writing went downhill.
I would also consider it his middle period. I don't have it in front of me but I'm thinking it came out in 1990. He definitely was in his 'prime' when he wrote it.
And, I agree with your comment in the response above, for some reason the book is never really mentioned by people and I have even heard some people over the years say they didn't like it. I'm not really sure why. I remember it being quite a compelling read.

Yeah, I noticed that too. I'm glad I am not the only one. I agree 100%. It is a compelling read.
Do you remember the scene where its revealed the kids died going to get more batteries when all the 'Tommyknockers' needed were simple ac---dc converters that could be found at radio shack. That made me laugh so hard.
