It's a documented fact that fewer and fewer people read. The people who DO read tend to buy large numbers of books. Ebooks is essentially an attempt to split the small community of book lovers into two camps, which will only increase the cost of printing actual books and start to strangle the industry.
That's bunk. Ebooks simply represent a new way to deliver standard content. DVD didn't kill the movie, nor did blu-ray, nor did digital download models. Movies are still around and thriving. Just because books can now be delivered electronically doesn't mean the industry will be strangled for some reason. It's true that we're in a time of transition, but booksellers are just trying to figure out how best to market and sell ebooks, that's all.
However, most people who read do so for pleasure. The act of reading is enjoyable. You can't "curl up with a good ebook" and I certainly hope you never can. The printed word, bound in a nice hardcover and stamped in ink onto crisp pages, is what I like.
That's fine if that's what you like, I have no problems with that. I would argue that you like that because you've been doing it all your life, though. If you bought and used an ereader exclusively for a few months, I think you'd prefer it. That happened to someone else in this thread, it happened to me, and it's happened to everyone I know who's purchased an ereader.
As to reading being enjoyable. . .that's still the case with an ereader, you know. You absolutely CAN curl up in front of a fire with an ereader. The "good book" part is still there, you're still experiencing what the author wanted you to. You're still holding something roughly the shape of a book, and staring at it for a few hours. In spite of what people who don't have ereaders think, the reading experience is very similar, and, in some ways, better.
I really think you're making some pretty strong statements for something you've never tried before. And since I know you'll jump on that (nitpicking is the easiest way to argue ), when I say "try," I mean "read a few books on." It's true that an ereader is not a paper book; you have to use one enough to get over that uncanny valley-esque revulsion before you can appreciate it. Like many of the best things in life, a reader takes some getting used to, but is very worth it.
