There are, IMO, two major "sad events" and two semi-sad...ermmm...things...that carry through most of series. I'll avoid the details here, so as to avoid spoilers, but you are welcome to PM me if you'd like to discuss it.
On the other hand if you get emotionally attached to your characters like I sometimes do (especially in this series), there are a TON of emotionally charged/tense moments and chapters. I think this is part of what makes this series so good. Also, fortunately alot of those moments end well in the long run, though some don't.
