I think that as far as the environmental impact is concerned, things will be slowly changing. For better or for worse, ebooks are really taking off, and will continue to do so for some time. This will reduce the amount of paper used, but could potentially reduce the author's salary as well. I like the idea of tipping the author, but when I really like an author's work, I just buy the book from the store, hoping that he gets better sales numbers. I also do my part by reviewing the book and trying to spread the word to get others into it.


Having books in paper form is good for the environment. It means that the CO2 taken up by the trees is bound and does not decompose. The problem arises only if you throw out/burn books.
