The first book was good, the second not quite as good but enjoyable but the further in one went the worse they got until I lost interest around midway through the series and never actually bothered to finish it. Normally when I started a series I always read through to the end just to see what happened but this was the first time I quit, it was like being preached to with a sledge hammer.
As for the show, its not the most brilliant tv ever made but if you want some light entertainment that does not require too much brain power its okey. It does seem to suffer from complete reset at the end of each episode with the characters not really changing much. That has changed a bit with some character development for Cara in Series 2 going from ice cold mord sith to cool but human mord sith.
Plus the actor who plays Zedd (who I think was in Matrix 3 as the train man) is great.

This is my take too. Plus my sister who didn't read them thinks the series is rather original for TV
