That is part of the problem. It makes the media very enthusiastic.

And don't you just hate it when the Olympics are the only thing the news seem able to write about? Is there any way we could get an anti-sports-and-especially-the-fucking-Olympics-bookclub as a bi-annual event?
I love the Winter Olympics. I intend to watch it every single night. These are the sports I most enjoy actually participating in! Is there not a single event you enjoy watching?
Curling is not too bad.
Why the anti-sports from you? There is much beauty in these sports. Much to admire about the excellence that many of these athletes show. The drive. The perseverance. What it shows that the body can accomplish. The artistry.
And the flegm and the spit and the ick factor of it all. And the monotony!
I like the ancient Greek ideal when it comes to sports - one needs to work both the body and the mind. All in harmony. Bodies to match minds. Plus, I like the ideal of the Olympics, even if in practice no one ceases wars any longer during this time period.
Yes, but I fear the healthy bodies here are rather at the expense of the healthy mind. Not to mention that whether these are healthy bodies is an open question. How many have already been barred from entry because of dubious tests?
Still, it is a good moment for the world to focus on a city, learn about its culture, heritage, history and focus on people's stories that make it into the news. Stories not about horror and death. Stories about courage. Stories about humanity.
Meh. The Olympics meant something long ago. Now it is a commercial display of sad money use.

I rather enjoy the Winter Olympics. The Summer Olympics are worthless shit, for the most part.

This just strengthens the stereotype that you have to be a nerdish bookworm to enjoy literature...
