It's a jukebox musical, based on the 50s movie Forbidden Planet, which was itself based on The Tempest. And it therefore mixes sci-fi warp drive jokes with Shakespearean quotations out of context with Freudian psychology with Jerry Lee Lewis's "Great Balls of Fire" (sung as the ship flies through a meteor shower).

Also, doesn't Wicked exactly fit the fantasy musical genre?
