and that a book that seems bad along the way can become good if the ending does something good with what had seemed bad. So yes. It makes no sense to me to judge a book based on someone not being able to finish it. Because I would always finish it.
...through 700 pages of drivel for the sake of a few pages of ending cannot be considered anything but bad writing (to me), or a bad experience.
Reading should be enjoyable, informative etc. If I am not enjoying a book after 200 pages, why oh why would I force myself to continue the pain for another 4-500 pages? It just makes no sense. But it makes perfect sense for me to judge that book based on my perceptions, not despite the fact I didn't finish it, but precisely because I didn't finish it.
I suspect it depends on what makes the book "bad". If the writing is atrocious, there can be little remedy in an ending. But if the problem is that the plot seems unconnected, for example, the ending can transform all that went before if it brings everything together. That is often the best type of plot, I find -- the type where you do not see the dénouement coming.

Does it upset you when people review books that they didn't finish?

I had a hard time with the first 225 pages of LotR and Les Miserables. I was slogging.
