My wife is looking for a fantasy series to read - she liked Mistborn but didn't like Elantris, and she loved Martin but can't stand Jordan. Any suggestions?

Martin has stated that this series helped inspire ASOIAF. It starts off slowly in the first book, but after the first hundred pages or so it picks up and keeps going right until the end.

It probably stands somewhere between Jordan and Martin. It's pretty gritty, has a lot of political history going on, but still has the standard central premise of 'young man on an adventure' driving it through common to many books.
