Very much so. Ghavrel Send a noteboard - 24/01/2010 03:30:47 AM
It's highly focused on a mercenary company, so politics is largely limited to how politicians deal with the company. That being said, the characters are very much mercenaries, not people who put honor above all else and do lots of nice things; the first book of the series has them in service to an "evil empire" of sorts.

EDIT: In addition, although magic plays a more significant role than in Martin, it has none of the "this is a detailed magic system that I will fully explain" that characterizes Erikson and Jordan. Magic is left to the magicians, and they don't explain what they do. It has a much more natural feel than Jordan and Erikson. I would compare it to Tolkien, but LotR's magic is much more subdued than the Black Company's is.
"We feel safe when we read what we recognise, what does not challenge our way of thinking.... a steady acceptance of pre-arranged patterns leads to the inability to question what we are told."
