Dear Gods, why do publishing houses hate on Americans so badly?

I have no idea. In Pratchett's case, I think it might have been the scantily clad ladies on the early books (Moving Pictures, for example) that were deemed unfit for prudish Americans, and after starting out one way they couldn't change halfway in.


That doesn't sound really likely to me though - they never seem to think twice normally about changing style half way through. And he's done a hell of a lot of books for them to be still tied into an old deal.
Plus the usual problem with American fantasy covers that I've seen is that they look like soft porn, regardless of what the book is about.
