Ian M. Banks is simply one of the better writers of sci-fi works... I haven't read his fiction so I have no opinion on it. Banks is good at the craft of writing, is a great storyteller, has a keen ability to develop characters, and can pull together one heck of a novel.
After I read a few more Culture novels, I can speak directly about the works.
