I was at the bookstore yesterday, looking through the Sci-Fi/Fantasy section and trying desperately to choose a new author to start reading. I have never had such a difficult time picking a book before. So I am hoping to get some ideas for authors in this genre that I haven't read, but really should. I'll give you an idea of some of the authors I have read. And I don't care if they are series or stand-alone. Although I read a lot of series books. Thanks for helping me!
Ok....I have read: Anne McCaffrey, Terry Goodkind, Robert Jordan, George RR Martin, Elizabeth Haydon, Jennifer Fallon, and Brandon Sanderson.

You might want to start out with his Fionavar Tapestry trilogy, which is the most "classic" fantasy, but his other books are great too. Tigana is magnificent, and I've heard nothing but good about The Lions of al-Rassan too.
Also, Tad Williams. His Memory, Sorrow and Thorn is a pretty good fantasy series, but personally I prefer Otherland, which is mostly set in virtual reality, allowing Williams to set the story in an impressive variety of settings - fantasy, sci-fi, historical, literature-inspired, you name it. One of the best female protagonists in a major fantasy series, too.
