That merely touches on the beginning of his demonstration that Monte Cristo is not a great work of literature, but it leaves out the more important parts of his thoughts on the novel in his Eloggio del Montecristo in "Supermen"(that can be applied to quite a few other "too long/badly written" series or novels that have a huge and dedicated following... I've seen this quoted in essays on "Bleak House" or Defoe, and recently about Harry Potter. I've used it myself in a discussion on Robert Jordan):

savoir, on saute les pages et les descriptions (on les saute, mais on sait qu'elles sont là, on accélère subjectivement tout en sachant que le temps narratif est objectivement dilaté) ? "Le Grand Meaulnes d'Alain-Fournier est sans doute mille fois mieux écrit que le Comte de Monte-Cristo, mais il alimente l'imagination et la sensibilité d'un petit nombre, il n'est pas immense comme Monte-Cristo, pas aussi homérique, il n'est pas destiné à nourrir avec une égale vigueur et une aussi longue durée l'imaginaire collectif. C'est seulement une oeuvre d'art. Monte-Cristo au contraire nous dit que, si raconter est un art, les règles de cet art sont différentes de celles des autres genres littéraires. Et que peut-être on peut raconter, et faire de la grande narrativité, sans pour autant créer ce que la sensibilité moderne appelle une oeuvre d'art.

Il est des épopées bancales, qui ne donnent point naissance à une oeuvre parfaite mais à un fleuve boueux. Si elles n'obéissent pas aux règles de l'esthétique, elles satisfont en tout cas à la fonction fabulatrice, laquelle n'est pas aussi directement liée à la fonction esthétique."

Eco has a complex love-hate relationship with this book:

"Le Comte de Monte Cristo est sans doute l’un des romans les plus passionants qui aient jamais été écrits, et c’est aussi l’un des romans les plus mal écrits de tous les temps et de toutes les littératures"
